About This Site
The Watchdogs of
the Garrison Common.
Researchers, historians, and data nerds who also happen to live here.
Tempo Tea is a collective of researchers, historians, and data nerds who also happen to be residents of the Fort York neighbourhood. We are the neighbours who aren't just looking at the flashy renderings — we're looking out our front doors at the steady, repeat encroachment on the Fort York Heritage Conservation District.
After years of seeing our history treated as a development opportunity, we can no longer stay silent.
The Stand: Appropriate Development Only
To be clear: we aren't against the team. We aren't even against development in the Gore. We want the Toronto Tempo to thrive, and we want this neighbourhood to be a point of pride for the city. But we refuse to accept development that bypasses the legal protections of our heritage for the sake of political optics.
Our Core Concerns
The 701 Fleet Street "Bypass"
The city and the franchise are touting 2,200 hours of community recreation as a "benefit" in exchange for a long-term lease. We call that a distraction. Community recreation in the Gore is essential, but it cannot be used as a bargaining chip to skip mandatory Heritage Impact Assessments and visual reviews.
Process over PR
We don't care about the shiny artist renderings — we care about the 1909 land transfer agreements and the established planning precedents for the Garrison Common. If a project is world-class, it should be able to stand up to world-class scrutiny.
Forensic Advocacy
We aren't just fans — we're the self-appointed auditors of the Fort York HCD. We dig through 400-page municipal reports and the fine print of land agreements to serve the tea that City Hall would rather keep hidden.
The Line in the Sand
History and basketball can coexist, but only if the rules apply to everyone. We are calling for a total halt to the lease vote until every legally required heritage and visual impact study is disclosed to the public.
We live here, we know the history, and we're making sure it isn't erased in the rush to tip-off.
Tempo Tea is an independent, non-affiliated watchdog group. We're here for the team, the neighbourhood, and the integrity of the Fort.
